Spanish history at 2025 Masters World Team Championships (75, 80, 85)
Held at the Tenis Klub Zlatni Rat in Bol, Croatia, the fourth and final edition of the 2025 ITF Masters World Team Championships saw heavyweight nations battle to claim gold medals in the 75 and over, 80 and over, and 85 and over categories.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Adriatic, the clay courts of Bol saw some inspiring and hard-fought contests between established stars of the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour on finals day.
In the Men’s 75+ Bitsy Grant Cup, Spain and Germany split contrasting singles matches. Germany’s Peter Marklstorfer claimed a gruelling 7-6 6-4 victory against Spain’s Jorge Camina Borda in the first match, which included a 75-minute first set decided 10-8 in the tiebreak, before Jairo Velasco Ramirez dominated Bernd Martin 6-1 6-0 to level the tie.
All four singles players returned to the court for the deciding doubles as Camina Borda and Velasco Ramirez easily defeated Marklstorfer and Martin 6-4 6-0.
There was further Spanish success in the Men’s 85+ Lorne Main Cup as Felix Candela and Juan Jose Barbera Bartolome won both singles matches in straight sets against Argentina’s Maximiliano Serraville and Mario Martinez Blanco. This marked the first time Spain have won the Lorne Main Cup, as the previous seven editions were won either by USA or Germany.
The Men’s 80+ Gardnar Mulloy Cup was decided in the doubles following one-sided singles matches. After France’s Michel Coutrix easily defeated USA’s David Dollins 6-1 6-0, experienced Jimmy Parker levelled the tie 6-1 6-3 against Eric Loliee.
Parker then teamed up with Frederick Drilling to win 6-0 6-3 against the French pair of Coutrix and Loliee. In doing so, USA completed a famous "four-peat", having won the previous three editions of the Gardnar Mulloy Cup.
There were also historic achievements for USA in the women’s Cups. The Women’s 85+ Angela Mortimer Cup has been completely dominated by the USA since its introduction in 2019. The 2025 edition was no different as the all-star lineup of Donna Fales, Roz King, Susanne Clark, and Dorothy Wasser combined to win all four of their ties to win the title.
The Women’s 75+ Queens Cup was decided by a round robin of three teams. Surprise package Finland, who shocked defending champions Great Britain in an earlier phase, were defeated by Australia and USA 0-3.
USA claimed the Cup with a 2-1 victory over Australia. Liane Bryson defeated Sheryl Kerwick and Gwenda Ward defeated Helen Worland in straight sets, before Australia won the consolatory doubles match.
In another round robin of three teams, France defended their title from 2023 and 2024 in the Women’s 80+ Doris Hart Cup. Led by the legendary Gail Benedetti, France defeated USA 2-1 in the key tie with singles victories for Sylvie Galfard Kristen and Benedetti.
After an exciting week of action on Brac Island, the ITF Masters World Individual Championships will run from 11-18 October.
