Spain reign supreme in Gran Canaria
Home advantage paid dividends in Gran Canaria as Spanish pairs swept the board at each of the Nox Beach Tennis Open events.
In the BT50, which was taking place for the first time on 12-14 February, Victor Lopez and Saulo Tejada took the men’s title after defeating the surprise package of the tournament, Netherlands’ Joeri Ertner and Bo Groot 6-4 6-3 in the final.
The Dutch duo had stunned top seeds Louis Posner and Antomi Ramos in the first round, clinching a thrilling encounter 6-3 4-6 10-8, before going on to take down the fourth seeds from Italy Riccardo Manenti and Paolo Tronci 6-0 3-6 11-9 in the semi-finals.
In the women’s draw Ariadna Costa and Eva Fernandez were in scintillating form. The Spanish pair knocked out second seeds Ganesha Diaz and Sabrina Lopez 6-4 6-4 in the first round and didn’t look back, winning in straight sets all the way the way to take the title.
Costa and Fernandez overcame Carolina Miranda and Anely Ruiz 6-2 6-3 in the final after Miranda and Ruiz had caused an upset of their own in the semi-finals by knocking out top seeds Julia Chubarova and Omaira Farias 6-3 2-6 11-9.
In the BT10 event on 15-16 February, it was two teenagers that stole the headlines as 15-year-olds Ines Leon and Daniela Rodriguez showed that the future of Spanish beach tennis strong by defeating Nicole Borzecka and Alina Robok of Poland 6-3 7-6(1).
The men’s title was captured by top seeds Javier Gonzalez and Santi Puente.
A total of 14 different nationalities took part in the Nox Open events at the Club Open Gran Canaria and organisers thanked the sponsors for making this event possible.
