Sixteen-year-old Andreeva collects third ITF crown
Russian teenager Erika Andreeva collected her third title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in the latest milestone of her fledgling career.
The 16-year-old, who also won on Bulgarian soil in November at W15 Pazardzhik and at W15 Cairo in December, notched another title after beating Swiss Jenny Duerst 1-6 7-6(3) 6-0 in the final at W15 Sharm El Sheikh.
A top 50-ranked junior with five junior titles to her name, Andreeva’s triumph over the weekend saw her improve to a 30-7 career win-loss record on the ITF World Tennis Tour since playing her first professional match 15 months ago. She also climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 744 on Monday.
Weronika Falkowska also reached a new career-high – rising 50 spots to No. 619 after winning her third straight title at W15 Monastir.
The 20-year-old Pole overcame Austrian Sinja Kraus 6-3 7-6(1) to win her 15th consecutive match in Tunisia.
There were two first-time winners on the women’s World Tennis Tour last week, with 20-year-old Italian Nuria Brancaccio and 18-year-old Slovenian Pia Lovric enjoying milestone victories.
Brancaccio won the title at W15 Antalya after defeating Korean Su Jeong Jang 7-5 6-4, while Lovric collected her first professional singles crown at W15 New Delhi, defeating Russian Irina Khromacheva 6-3 6-4 in the title match.
Elsewhere, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz continued her flying start to 2021 by winning her third ITF title in four weeks at M25 Manacor.
The 29-year-old Spaniard, who has now won four of the last six tournaments she has entered, defeated compatriot Marina Bassols Riberta 6-2 6-1 in the final of the Mallorcan hard court tournament.
In the other W25 event to take place last week, Danielle Lao won her first professional singles title in six years after winning at W25 Newport Beach in California.
The 29-year-old American, whose last tournament triumph also came on home soil at a $25k event in Baton Rouge in 2015, defeated compatriot Claire Liu 6-2 4-6 6-2 in the final in just her second event of the season.
Lao’s five wins at Newport Beach were her first since she won a round in qualifying at a WTA 125k event in Indian Wells last March. Prior to her successful run last week, the world No. 235 - a former college tennis player at USC - had contested just four tournaments since falling in the final round of qualifying for the 2020 Australian Open.
