Record-breaking Fruhvirtova notches latest milestone with Dutch title
Czechia’s Brenda Fruhvirtova’s on-court dominance continued with victory at W40 Oldenzaal as the 16-year-old collected her fourth ITF World Tennis Tour title of the season with another sublime performance.
Success in the Netherlands was Fruhvirtova’s second title at W40 level having also topped the podium at W40 Bengaluru in March, although her triumph at W60 Hechingen last month remains her career best.
The 16-year-old, who is ranked No. 129 in the WTA Rankings, now has 12 ITF World Tennis Tour titles to her name and is the first player – man or woman – to achieve such a feat before turning 17.
There are only two other players who have won 12 ITF World Tennis Tour titles by the age of 18 – India’s Sania Mirza and Latisha Chan of Chinese Taipei – with Fruhvirtova showcasing her immense talent and potential in doing so by an even earlier age.
Fruhvirtova recovered from the disappointment of defeat in the first round of US Open qualifying by ripping through the field at W40 Oldenzaal and sealing silverware without dropping a set – and losing just 26 games. Home favourite Anouk Koevermans was her final victim, with Fruhvirtova prevailing 7-5 6-2.
Another of Czechia’s rising stars, Sara Bejlek, was on the cusp of becoming the first Czech woman to win four or more ITF World Tennis Tour titles at W60 level or higher.
However, the 17-year-old succumbed to the Romania’s Andreea Mitu in the final at W60 Prague. World No. 259 Mitu prevailed 7-6(1) 2-6 6-3 to collect her first ITF World Tennis Tour title since 2019.
At the week’s other W60 event at Collonge-Belleriva, France’s Chloe Paquet defeated Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini in the final to notch her first ITF World Tennis Tour title for two years, since conquering all before her at W80 Poitiers in October 2021.
