Preview: 2023 ITF Masters (55-60) World Team Championships
A feast of high-quality tennis kicks-off in Portugal on Sunday as the ITF Masters World Team Championships – the annual showpiece event for players in the 55 and over and 60 and over age category – gets underway.
The ITF World Championships, which conclude on 18 August, will see a total of 87 teams in the mix for honours.
This year sees the welcome return of all of the 2022 Team Cup winners. The USA are bidding to defend the Von Cramm Cup (60+) and Austria Cup (55+) which they won in Florida last year, but will face stiff competition from European nations such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
In the women's events, meanwhile, Italy hope to repeat last year's triumph in the Maureen Connolly Cup (55+). Spain, last year's runner-up, will aim to go one better this time around. The Alice Marble Cup (60+) sees Germany going for gold again with USA, Great Britain and Australia all vying to dethrone the reigning champions.
The ITF Masters 55+ and 60+ World Individual Championships run from 19 – 26 August in Lisbon. The tournament will see many of the stars from the Teams competition go for individual glory, in addition to a host of other high-ranked players. Eoin Collins, Jurate Hardy, Bill Moss and Liselot Prechtel are some of the strong contenders for honours.
