'Our combined duty' - renewed call for male allies on IWD 2024

08 Mar 2024

On International Women’s Day 2024, ITF President David Haggerty has renewed his rallying cry for men in leadership positions across the world to advocate for more women in positions of power, by becoming ITF Advantage All Male Allies.

Today gives men in leadership positions in all sectors the chance to reflect on what they are doing to support and invest in women’s progress.

Since my last International Women's Day message, we have seen many powerful men come forward as Male Allies, including a good regional split across our National Associations.

These are encouraging signs, but we need so many more to continue that progress. This is why I have written this message today.

The role of men cannot be underestimated. It is our combined duty to start championing the champions. As a UN HeForShe ambassador, I insist that male leaders across all sports, industry, political and non-profit sectors step up and become Male Allies.

Committing to making a measurable investment in women is a must. It will guarantee future growth for our sport.

In 2019 the ITF embarked on a pathway to parity, with a five-year investment plan to deliver equal playing opportunities for female and male professional players. We achieved parity in 2023.

In the same year we reached another seminal moment - equal prize money for the men’s and women’s World Cup of Tennis; the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge.

These investments have resulted in greater diversity on and around the court, they’ve attracted increased attention, sponsorship, data and broadcast rights revenue.

Investment has exponentially increased value for the women’s game. And this is only the beginning.

We are one of many organisations across the world that are delivering on our commitment to gender parity.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. Progress can only be possible when male leaders step up and do just that.
