Tamas Hamori, an Honorary Life President of the Hungarian Tennis Association and former Tennis Europe Vice President, passed away on 22 March at the age of 77.
Hamori regularly represented Hungary at ITF Annual General Meetings, was heavily involved in the development of tennis, both nationally and regionally, and gave much of his life to a sport that he loved – both on and off the tennis court.
A former Top 10 player in his home country, Hamori won multiple medals at the Hungarian National Tennis Championship and went on to coach a number of the nation's promising players including his own son, Bence Hamori, who became a Top 20 player in Hungary before winning a university tennis scholarship in the United States.
Hamori held multiple board member positions at the Hungarian Tennis Association over three decades, including the role of Vice-President. In 2006, he devised and launched the Hungarian Manager Open – a much loved concept in the country which provides business men and women and their partners with a competitive outlet away from their day jobs, and encourages networking, competitive spirit and the productive use of leisure time. The event has become a well-established brand and annual tennis series across Hungary.
Hamori, who was connected to tennis through every aspect of his life, was a hugely active ambassador of the sport in the domestic and international arena and was recognised with an ITF Award for Services to the Game at the Annual ITF AGM in Santiago, Chile in 2015.
Hamori as an individual, and his contributions to the sport, will be sorely missed within the tennis community.
