Nothing compares to the Olympics, says Zverev
Germany’s Alexander Zverev might be looking forward to competing in a first Olympic Games, but that doesn’t mean the 24-year-old is any less focussed on winning a medal for his country.
The world No. 5, who is competing in the men’s doubles alongside Jan-Lennard Struff, also intends to take part in the mixed doubles (entries for which close on Tuesday 27 July).
“I’m very looking forward to it,” said Zverev. “Obviously with COVID it is going to be different, but I’m playing all three disciplines, I am excited to compete for Germany, but also compete for medals.”
The German went on to explain what the Olympic Games mean to him.
“It’s the biggest sporting event in the world,” he said. “I think no other sporting event compares to the Olympics. You compete for your country, you compete for your team, you see all the other nations, all the other athletes that are there. You see legends from all different kinds of sports compete for the same thing. It’s very special.”
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis Event starts on Friday 24 July, with the medal matches scheduled to take place on 30 July-1 August.
