Murray withdraws from singles at Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Two-time Olympic singles champion Andy Murray has withdrawn from the singles event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to a right quad muscle strain.
Murray had been scheduled to face Felix-Auger Aliassime in the third match on Centre Court on Sunday but has elected to concentrate on doubles alongside partner Joe Salisbury following medical advice. He will be replaced in the draw by Max Purcell of Australia.
“I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe," said Murray via a statement.
The 34-year-old Brit, who became the first player to defend an Olympic singles title when he followed his London 2012 triumph with victory at Rio 2016, also won mixed doubles silver alongside Laura Robson at London 2012. He has never progressed beyond the second round in men’s doubles at an Olympic Games.
Alongside brother Jamie, Murray fell in the first round at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, having reached round two together on their Games debut at Beijing 2008.
Murray and Salisbury will play German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the second round.
Marton Fucsovics also withdrew from the singles on Sunday citing a right shoulder injury. The Hungarian will be replaced by another Australian, Luke Saville.
