Raymond and Bryan win mixed bronze at London 2012
The United States secured their fourth medal of the Olympic Tennis Event after Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond's 6-3 4-6 [10-4] victory against Germany's Sabine Lisicki and Christopher Kas in the bronze medal-play-off.
In the last match tennis match to be played at London 2012 and under the roof on Wimbledon's Centre Court, the reigning Wimbledon mixed doubles champions needed 1 hour 14 minutes to overcome Lisicki and Kas. After dropping the second set they romped to victory in the match tiebreak, using their greater experience to withstand a last-minute fightback from the German pair.
Raymond and Bryan's win followed gold medals for Serena Williams in women's singles, Serena and Venus Williams in women's doubles, and Bob and Mike Bryan in men's doubles this weekend. The result means that, like Serena Williams, Bryan has captured two medals at the event. It also handed the veteran Raymond, 38, her first Olympic medal and provided consolation for the loss she and Liezel Huber had suffered earlier in the day in the women's doubles bronze medal play-off.
The Americans got the only break of the first set, taking Kas's serve in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead, and Bryan served it out. But Lisicki and Kas, who had teamed up for the first time at London 2012, stepped up a gear in the second set and after Lisicki resisted four break points on her serve in the third game, the duo broke Bryan at 4-5 as he served to stay in the set.
In the match tiebreak Raymond and Bryan raced to a 7-0 lead before the Germans pulled the score back to 7-2. Mike Bryan's volley followed by Raymond's crosscourt backhand set up match point, but Lisicki saved it on her serve and the Germans saved another to bring the score to 9-4. This time however, on Raymond's serve, the Americans didn't miss, clinching the match when Kas sent a return into the net.
