Mikrut's milestone moment as Croatian seals maiden pro title in Osijek
Home favourite Luka Mikrut of Croatia claimed the first ITF World Tennis Tour title of his career following victory on the clay of M25 Osijek.
The 19-year-old dropped just one set all week as he progressed to the final where he dispatched Argentina’s Valerio Aboian 6-4 6-4 to take a significant step in his ongoing tennis development.
Mikrut, who reached a career-high No. 40 in the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Rankings before embarking on a professional career, has been making steady progress in the ITF World Tennis Tour this season.
Advancing to the semi-finals at M15 Opatija in March seems to have been something of a breakthrough moment as from there he reached two finals and a semi-final before triumphing at M25 Osijek.
Victory propelled Mikrut, who represented Croatia at the 2018 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, to No. 677 – a jump of nine places – in the ATP Rankings.
Italy’s Luca Castagnola was another player to win his ITF World Tennis Tour title at M15 Pescara. Chris Rodesch, meanwhile, became only the second player from Luxembourg to claim victory at M25 level as he topped the podium at M25 Southaven.
