Mayot jets into Chengdu with momentum and swagger

France’s Harold Mayot jetted into Chengdu with a victory smile plastered across his face following a stellar triumph in Osaka over the weekend – his maiden Grade A title.

The 17-year-old’s success provides a further boost to an already progressive season which has seen Mayot reach the semi-finals of a Junior Grand Slam, at Wimbledon in July, for the first time.

That run at the All England Club was his best showing at a Junior Grand Slam by far, with his efforts at the other three majors this year yielding a solitary win at each, equating to a flurry of second-round exits.

His exploits in SW19 included him landing a straight-sets knockout blow against reigning ITF Junior Finals boys’ champion Brandon Nakashima – not a bad feather in the cap with the latest instalment of the Chengdu extravaganza lurking.

Now fresh from another triumph, perhaps the venue of his latest success – the Land of the Rising Sun – is synonymous with the current state of his own career. With wind very much in his sails, Mayot clearly has no intention of being an also-ran when silverware is distributed.

“It has been a good season for me,” Mayot told itftennis.com. “I reached my first Junior Grand Slam semi-final so it was a beautiful year. Winning that quarter-final at Wimbledon against Illya Beloborodko was amazing.

“Now I hope I can finish it with victory at the ITF Junior Finals, which would be something truly amazing, so special. It would mean everything to me.”

It proved a French double-header in Osaka as Diane Parry topped the podium in the girls’ draw, which resulted in her rocketing to the summit of the updated ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Rankings presented by IMG Academy on Monday. She is now leading the charge for the much-coveted year-end No. 1 girls' spot.

The prospect of a similar French landslide victory at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre is heightened by four players competing under the Le Tricolore banner in Chengdu.

Joining Mayot in the boys’ draw is Valentin Royer, while Parry and Elsa Jacquemot will contest the girls’ division. Never before has a nation secured the boys’ and girls’ title in the same year at the ITF Junior Finals, although France is on a winning roll here following Clara Burel’s stunning performance 12 months ago.

Burel rose from the ashes of galling defeats in the final of the Australian Open Junior Championships, US Open Junior Tennis Championship and the Youth Olympic Games to reign supreme in the Far East.

“If I can do what Clara did, that would be amazing,” said Mayot. “I have spoken with her and with Hugo Gaston, who was also here last year, and they both said it’s an amazing and well-organised tournament and so far that has proven to be the case.

“As I always do, I will respect my opponent and try my best. If I do that then hopefully I can win the trophy. To finish the season in this way would be a dream.”

Mayot will enter the competition occupying the No. 5 slot in the junior world rankings, although three of his rivals in the boys’ draw can boast a Junior Grand Slam title-win this term. But, perhaps crucially following his exploits in Osaka, the Metz-born teenager has the vital ingredient of momentum and no lack of swagger in his armoury.
