Landaluce strikes fear into SW19 foes with 12th straight win on grass

03 Jul 2022

If there is one player striking fear into the rest of the boys’ draw at the Junior Championships, Wimbledon it is Spain’s Martin Landaluce after his love affair with grass continued at SW19.

Making his Wimbledon debut, Landaluce surged into the second round by dispatching Gerard Campana Lee of Korea, Republic 6-2 6-3 and now faces a showdown with Australian qualifier Ed Winter.

The 16-year-old had not played competitively on grass before last month’s appearance at J1 Nottingham but has made light of such inexperience by winning 12 successive matches and lifting silverware at successive tournaments.

Incidentally, Great Britain's Will Jansen is his nearest rival in this particular race, with the left-hander chalking up his eighth grass-court success of the campaign against Juan Carlos Prado Angelo of Bolivia yesterday.

Landaluce, who is ranked No. 12 in the boys’ rankings, topped the podium at J1 Nottingham before repeating the feat at J1 Roehampton, taking his tally of trophies this season to five.

“Because I play very aggressively and very flat, my game has adapted very well to the super pace of grass,” Landaluce told itftennis.com. “I thought it was going to be difficult for me, but I have felt so comfortable on the grass these last few weeks.

“I honestly came over to take the experience, maybe win a few matches, but I ended up winning two tournaments and I am feeling great. I am still just trying to do my best and enjoy the experience, but I am feeling really comfortable and happy out there.

“More or less, I believe I am playing the best I have done in my career. I have also played well on clay this season, winning three titles and there have been some good matches along the way, but in other ways this period has been the best for me.”

Elsewhere in the boys’ draw, top seed Gabriel Debru, who was part of the France team which finished runners-up in the 2021 Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals, breezed into the second round after brushing aside Great Britain’s Louis Bowden 6-0 6-1.

Debru is bidding to become the first boy to win back-to-back Junior Grand Slams – and claim a Roland Garros-Wimbledon double – since former junior world No. 1 Tseng Chun Hsin of Chinese Taipei in 2018.

Switzerland’s Kilian Feldbausch, who reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open Junior Championships in January, also reached the second round after overcoming Leanid Boika of the United States 6-1 6-4.

There were also victories for Belgium’s Gilles Arnaud Bailly, the boys’ runner-up at Roland Garros, and Croatia’s Dino Prizmic, who defeated Nicholas Godsick of the United States and Thailand’s Tanapatt Nirundorn respectively.

Godsick is the son of Roger Federer's agent, Tony, and his clash with Bailly on Court No. 7 drew a star-studded crowd, with Federer himself watching on from the Wimbledon balcony.

There was also first-round success for two-time Junior Grand Slam doubles champion Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, who overpowered Micah Braswell of the United States 7-6(4) 6-2.

Wong is to feature in a behind-the-scenes ITF video which follows his journey through J1 Roehampton and the Junior Championships, Wimbledon, providing insight into life as an aspiring tennis player.
