La Marsa paves the way for the ITF Masters Tour in Africa
The Tennis Club A.S.Marsa provided the backdrop for a high-quality week of tennis at the recent MT100 La Marsa, in Tunisia.
As one of only two ITF Masters tournaments in Africa on the calendar in 2023 - the other being the MT400 Agadir in Morocco - the tournament did not disappoint with huge entry numbers. Players from across the globe, including Japan, India, Europe and Australia, competed at the event - with draws exceeding expectations for men and women for each age group from 30-60.
Tournament director Mourad Sassi oversaw the successful tournament, Tunisia's only Masters event of the year.
"The MT100 La Marsa provided an opportunity for our club to reconnect with its habits of organising ITF Masters events," Sassi said after the conclusion of the tournament.
"The tournament recorded a high number of registrations and took place on 8 clay courts [at the the Tennis Club A.S.Marsa]. We had very good feedback from all the players."
The MT100 La Marsa was not without its challenges, as bad weather risked a premature conclusion to play.
However, according to Sassi, "the staff did a great job of ensuring play on all courts, despite the rain and poor weather".
Indeed, the tournament provides an excellent benchmark for future ITF Masters Tour events in Africa and paves the way for a new wave of tournaments on the continent.
