Jimenez Kasintseva to make Andorran tennis history at US Open
Grand Slam qualifying always provides wonderful storylines and the 2025 US Open has not disappointed. Here are a couple of stories to whet the appetite.
The starting point is Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, who by negotiating three rounds of qualifying will become the first player – man or woman – from Andorra to compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam. The 20-year-old plays Australia’s Maya Joint in round one.
Jimenez Kasintseva shot to prominence in 2020 when she became the youngest winner of a Junior Grand Slam since Coco Gauff at 2018 Roland Garros when she conquered all before her at the Australian Open. She was just 14 at the time.
The former junior world No. 1 won her first pro title in 2021 on the ITF World Tennis Tour and has won a further four since. To assist her ongoing development, the world No. 132 has also received financial assistance through the ITF-operated Grand Slam Player Development Programme.
Coleman Wong, meanwhile, has become the first player from Hong Kong to reach the main draw at a Grand Slam since 1988 after negotiating three rounds of qualifying at the 2025 US Open.
It was the seventh time that Wong has entered qualifying for a Grand Slam and after defeating Great Britain’s Billy Harris in the final round, he will now make his Grand Slam debut. He faces Aleksandar Kovacevic of the United States in round one.
Wong has tasted success at the US Open previously, having won the boys’ doubles title alongside France’s Max Westphal in 2021. The 21-year-old has since progressed along the player pathway and is now ranked No. 174 in the ATP Rankings.
During the 2022, the ITF produced All on the Line: Coleman Wong – a behind the scenes video which followed Coleman as he competed at J300 Roehampton and the Junior Championships, Wimbledon.
Wong has also received financial assistance through the ITF-operated Grand Slam Player Development Programme to help with his ongoing development.
