ITF delivers coaching masterclass to boost Pacific participation
High on the list of development priorities for the ITF is increasing participation throughout the Pacific region, and the latest coaching initiative has paved the way for further progress to be made.
The Cook Islands were the focus of the coaching expertise as Gary Purcell, ITF Development Officer for Pacific Oceania, put on an ITF Play Tennis course for a host of deliverers on the island of Rarotonga.
Recipients of the coaching session emanated from Rarotonga itself, Aitutaki, Atiu, Mauke, Mangaia and Mitiaro – areas where tennis has undergone something of a resurgence in recent years.
Whether they be volunteers, parents or tennis enthusiasts, nine participants completed the ITF Play Tennis course and are now armed with essential tools in order deliver tennis to future generations.
“It was a pleasure to deliver this coaching course to such energetic participants,” said Purcell.
“Davina Hosking-Ashford, part of the Tennis Cook Islands (TCI) executive committee, and all members of TCI were extremely accommodating and did a great job in facilitating this opportunity for would-be coaches.”
