It has been quite the year for Hubert Hurkacz and now the 24-year-old from Poland is realising one of his dreams by competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Hurkacz burst onto the scene in Miami this year when he became the lowest-ranked player to win a Masters 1000 title since Tomas Berdych triumphed in Paris in 2005.

And his fine form in 2021 continued when he defeated Roger Federer in the last eight at Wimbledon to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final.

Now ranked No. 12 in the world, Hurkacz enters Tokyo 2020 as one of the players to beat.

“I always dreamed to play in the Olympics,” explained the Wroclaw native. “I always wanted to go there, feel the atmosphere, be with the other players and just fight for the medals.

“It’s something special to be able to represent your country in the Olympic Games and I will try my best to be as good as I can.”

Hurkacz, who has been enjoying his time in Tokyo if his social media profile is anything to go by, added that he always believed in himself when he was younger and how he wants to show everyone what he can do on the biggest stage.

He added: “Coming into the Olympics, you want to go there to get a medal. Getting a medal is a huge achievement and [would be] a dream come true.”

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis Event starts on Friday 24 July, with the medal matches scheduled to take place on 30 July-1 August.
