Grand Slam glory means everything to Fernandez

08 Oct 2020

Argentina's wheelchair tennis star Gustavo Fernandez reflected on his career so far during a compelling interview with ITFTennis.com.

The World No. 2 admitted to being shocked that Rafael Nadal wrote the foreword to his biography and revealed that his Grand Slam victories - which include two triumphs at each of the Australian Open and Roland Garros and one at Wimbledon - are very personal to him.

Fernandez, who lost the use of his legs at a very early age, said there was nothing out of the ordinary about his upbringing and such was his passion for sport that he was playing tennis against able-bodied opponents before he even realised that he could make a life as a professional wheelchair player.

The 26-year-old's coach, Fernando San Martin, also gave some insight into what it's like working with the Argentine, explaining that the pair fight a lot but only because they both want Fernandez to be the best he can be.

The Paralympics are looming but Fernandez is taking it one match at a time without letting himself think about Tokyo 2020, but he did reveal how much he enjoyed his return to the court after the enforced absence due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
