One of the biggest shocks of the 2025 US Open has been Mexico’s Renata Zarazua defeating Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the first round. This was the biggest victory of Renata's career so far and her first against a Top 10 opponent.

The 27-year-old will be in action later today against former junior world No. 1 Diane Parry as she bids to reach the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time. She has reached the second round on four previous occasions.

Incidentally, Zarazua’s great-uncle, Vicente, won the demonstration men’s doubles tournament alongside Rafael Osuna at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and played 16 Davis Cup ties for his country between 1964 and 1975.

Renata has also represented her nation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and in Billie Jean King Cup, while she has risen to No. 82 in the WTA Rankings. She won four singles titles in 2024, two on the ITF World Tennis Tour and two WTA 125s.

Renata is also a four-time recipient of funding – totalling $62,500 – through the ITF-operated Grand Slam Player Development Programme, which supports players from developing tennis nations.

A big day awaits.
