Garcia-Perez and Talbi shine on ITF World Tennis Tour
Spaniard Georgina Garcia-Perez and Belarusian Shalimar Talbi mirrored each other’s achievements on the ITF World Tennis Tour this weekend, each collecting their second titles of 2020 – and second in their last three tournaments – with victories at W25 Porto and W15 Monastir, respectively.
Garcia-Perez defeated local wild card Francisca Jorge 1-6 6-4 6-3 in the final of the Portuguese hard court tournament to add to her triumph at W25+H Figueira Da Foz in mid-September.
The 28-year-old Spaniard, who also finished runner-up at W25 Prerov in Czech Republic either side of her two title wins in Portugal, has now collected 12 titles at ITF level – seven of which have come on hard courts and five on clay. The former world No. 124 is set to return to the Top 200 when the rankings are run again following Roland Garros.
Her run in Porto took in a semi-final win - and a third career victory - over the resurgent Beatriz Haddad-Maia, who she also beat in the W25+h Figueira Da Foz final. Haddad Maia has lost just two of her 24 matches - both to Garcia-Perez - since returning to professional tennis following an anti-doping ban, impressively winning titles in three of her five tournament appearances.
Runner-up Jorge, the 20-year-old world No. 591, made a rapid start to the Porto final, but was unable to make her early dominance count as she missed out on a first title of 2020. All three of her career triumphs on the ITF World Tennis Tour have come on home soil at W15 tournaments in Lousada – twice in 2018 and again in 2019.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Talbi has enjoyed an excellent three-week spell in Monastir, winning her first professional singles titles either side of a runner-up finish at three consecutive editions of the W15 tournament.
As a result, the world No. 395 improved to an 18-6 win-loss record for 2020, and is set to climb to a career-high ranking when the next rankings are run next week.
