Five Argentinians reach Grand Slam third round: first time since 2007
What a day it has been for the Cerundolo brothers at Roland Garros as both reached the third round – Juan Manuel following a stunning victory over world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Francisco after dispatching Hugo Gaston.
This is now the best performance by Juan Manuel at a Grand Slam, and the first time that the Cerundolo brothers have reached the third round at the same Grand Slam.
Argentina will be beaming with pride as five players – Francisco and Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Francisco Comesana, Thiago Agustin Tirante and Solana Sierra – have reached the third round across men’s and women’s singles. It is the first time this has happened at a Grand Slam since the 2007 US Open and the first time at Roland Garros in 20 years – since 2006.
It also means there will be a Grand Slam men’s singles winner other than Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz for the first time since 2023 when Novak Djokovic claimed the US Open title.
