Finland's Lagerbohm has the support of his country's finest

When Linus Lagerbohm checked his phone on Friday night, one of the first messages the talented Finnish junior received was from Wimbledon champion Harri Heliovarra.

The dual-Grand Slam doubles champion wanted to congratulate the 17-year-old on qualifying to play the Roland Garros boys’ singles which began on Sunday in Paris.

It is certain another celebratory message from the doubles star will have been waiting for Lagerbohm, a stylish right-hander, after his triumphant win on Sunday.

Lagerbohm, who progressed to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 victory over American Ryan Cozad, shares the same coach as Heliovarra and also trains with Otto Virtanen.

He has travelled with Heliovarri to some tournaments as a hitting partner and said it was always a thrill to see champions including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

“My coach (Boris Chernov) coaches Heliovarra, so I get to practice with him a lot. And, of course, Virtanen when he has time and he's in Finland, I get to practice with him sometimes as well,” Lagerbohm said.

“Especially the routines that they do before every practice, during practice when we play points, the mindset that they have and when they concentrate on every point, [it is] stuff like that they help me with.

“When I qualified here, Harri congratulated me and I also congratulated him, because he's doing really well here. Yes, we arrange some practices, things like that, so that is the connection.

“This is the most important tournament for me in my whole career. It keeps getting better and I am enjoying every moment.”

Lagerbohm, who enjoys golf in his spare time and is currently playing to a handicap of 11, believes Finland is establishing a fine tennis tradition following other Scandinavian nations.

“Sweden has been a great tennis country for a long, long time (and there are) some good players in Denmark and Finland as well,” he said.

“[There is] more inspiration. Finland is a smaller country, but Finland is growing a lot in the tennis world. Of course, we have 5.5 million people, and Sweden has way more, so they have had more players and better players. But Finnish tennis is getting there.”

Lagerbohm has played tournaments in Belgium, Germany, Spain, France and Lithuania this season, along with other events in France prior to qualifying for Roland Garros.

This includes a triumph in Siauliai, a city in Lithuania, which hosted a J200 tournament in February on hard court.

But Lagerbohm has been keen to make sure he continues his studies and said finding the right balance between school and competing in junior events was important.

“I do school most of (the) time on trips, like online, but when I have time in Finland, I go to school, of course, and see my friends,” he said.

“That's really important to me. I want to get the best out of it when I'm visiting Finland and there's no tournaments.”

It is not only between the baselines of a tennis court that Lagerbohm is progressing, but also on the golf course, with colourful American golfer John Daly a player he likes watching.

“It is the talent that he has, but not the cigarettes and the drinking. It is just his talent,” he said. “I like to play golf. When there are tee times, I always go with my friends. My handicap is 11.8, so I am getting there. I’m getting better, I think, every time I go out to play.”

In other notable results in the boys’ singles on Sunday, No. 1 seed Andres Santamarta Roig from Spain defeated French wildcard Ferdinand Livet Novkirichka 6-1 6-1.

He will play Italy’s Pierluigi Basile in the second round after he defeated Cruz Hewitt, the son of former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6 (4) 5-7 6-3 in an impressive performance.

Austrian Thilo Behrmann produced a quality 7-6 (1) 6-2 victory over No. 12 seed Alan Wazny from Poland, while Alejandro Arcila from Colombia defeated No. 8 seed Amir Omarkhanov 6-3 6-4.

No. 7 seed Yannik Theodor Alexandrescou continued his successful season on clay by defeating Oliver Bonding 6-4 6-3.
