Fernandez shortlisted for Americas award
Reigning Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon men’s wheelchair singles champion Gustavo Fernandez has been shortlisted for the 'José Luis Campo' Award, which recognises the best para-athlete of the Americas in 2019.
The Argentinian, who was named ITF World Champion for the second time in three years in December, is one of 10 athletes up for the award – the sole wheelchair tennis representative alongside athletes from taekwondo, swimming, athletics, power lifting, Nordic skiing, cycling, and badminton.
The winner will be decided by a public vote, which closes on 4 February 2020. For more details, click here to visit the Paralympic.org website.
Fernandez’s six-trophy season in singles included his first triumph at Wimbledon and a third successive men’s singles gold medal at the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru.
An historic run to the first wheelchair tennis calendar slam was ended at the semi-final stage of the US Open by Stephane Houdet, but he had already done enough to secure the year-end No.1 spot in the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour’s world rankings.
Now in its third year, the José Luis Campo Award annually honours the best athlete for her or his outstanding sporting achievements throughout the previous 12 months. The award, presented by the Americas Paralympic Committee, was named after the organisation’s founding president, credited with the development of the Paralympic Movement in the Americas for 20 years.
Mexican powerlifter Jose de Jesus Castillo Castillo was the winner of the first two editions in 2017 and 2018.
