Fantastic fifteen for Semenistaja on the ITF World Tennis Tour
Darja Semenistaja has become a familiar champion on the ITF World Tennis Tour in recent years, and the 21-year-old Latvian wasted little time finding her way into the winner’s circle again in 2024.
Semenistaja triumphed on Indian hard courts at W50 Bengalaru on Sunday after her opponent in the final, Frenchwoman Carole Monnet, retired while trailing 6-1 3-0.
The victory marked Semenistaja’s 15th title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in the space of two-and-a-half years.
It follows a standout 2023 season in which she won her first three titles at W60 level and climbed to a career-high No. 129 in the world.
Semenistaja is one of two Latvian women ranked inside the WTA’s Top 150 alongside Jelena Ostapenko, having broken into that elite group last August following a standout July in which she picked up two W60 titles and was named ITF World Tennis Tour Player of the Month.
The lefthander is a former junior world No. 39 but it is on the ITF World Tennis Tour that she has honed her craft, achieving new milestones over each of the past three seasons.
The Latvian won a Tour-leading seven titles in 2021 – albeit triumphing exclusively at W15 level – before stepping up to claim three W25 titles in 2022, and three W60s and a W40 crown in 2023.
If history is anything to go by, Semenistaja could be set for a breakthrough year in 2024.
