In the week he turned 29 years old, Kyle Edmund had two reasons to celebrate after capturing his first professional singles title in four years on the ITF World Tennis Tour as he stepped up his return from a succession of physical issues.

The Brit defeated Polish teenager Martyn Pawelski 6-4 6-4 on home soil at M25 Loughborough on Sunday to win his first title since he triumphed at the ATP New York Open in February 2020.

The triumph marked his 14th professional singles crown, his first at ITF level in a decade, and his sixth ITF singles title overall.

Edmund came through three deciding sets last week - a positive step forward for a player who, having reached the 2018 Australian Open semi-finals and climbed as high as No. 14 in the world later that year, appeared destined for the top of the sport.

But a catalogue of injuries halted those ambitions. He underwent three operations on his left knee between October 2020 and July 2022 and was sidelined again last summer with a right wrist injury.

Since his latest comeback attempt in October, Edmund - the current world No. 537 - has competed exclusively on the ITF World Tennis Tour, contesting eight events and reaching two finals (he also finished runner-up at M25 Edgbaston in his third event back), as he seeks to rebuild his ranking.
