Dodig, 17, wins first men's title a week after making pro debut
Seventeen-year-old Matej Dodig made an instant impact on the ITF World Tennis Tour this weekend – winning his first professional singles title just a week after making his debut in men’s competition.
The young Croat, who reached a high of No. 30 in the ITF Junior world rankings in January, wasted little time in making his presence felt in the men’s game – defeating Italian Federico Arnaboldi 6-0 6-2 on Sunday to win the title on home soil at M15 Rovinj.
Dodig cantered to a milestone maiden title without dropping a set (picking up three bagels en route), a week after making his World Tennis Tour debut in a second round finish 30km further north on the Croatian coastline at M15 Porec.
Just five other men since 2001 have won a title on their second professional appearance on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
Currently the world No. 1629, Dodig, who trains at Ivan Ljubicic's eponymous Academy, assumed a place in both events using a Junior Reserved entry, which sets aside a maximum of three main draw places for players with a Top 100 ITF junior ranking.
He was one of two teenage champions on the men’s ITF World Tennis Tour last week along with 19-year-old Frenchman Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg.
A former junior world No. 7 and boys’ singles semi-finalist at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2021, Gueymard Wayenburg collected his second ITF men’s crown after beating compatriot Antoine Ghibaudo at M15 Poitiers.
