Colombia hosts first-ever ITF beach tennis event
The organiser of the first-ever ITF professional beach tennis tournament in Colombia has said he hopes the success of the event will lead to the growth of the sport in his country.
Wilfer Solano, who oversaw the BT10 Cali at the Morumbi Sports Complex on 4-6 December said: “All the participants were excited and happy to have this type of event in the country.
“We also want to hold more national tournaments because this would be the starting point for a national circuit and a national ranking. We want to take part in more international events and have a Colombian national team representing our country.”
In the men's event, the tournament was won by Hector Gomez and Christian Guerrero by defeating Remis Paternina and Eduardo Ruiz 6-4 6-3 in the final. While in the women’s, it was an international triumph for the Italian Giordana Montoneri and the Venezuelan Berenice de Camargo.
Solano added: “We would like to highlight the importance, commitment and support of the Colombian Tennis Federation for this tournament. It is a sport that is relatively new in the country, so having the support of the institutions and the media was very important.”
