Cobolli collects maiden pro title in Antalya
Eighteen-year-old Flavio Cobolli celebrated a landmark triumph this weekend after collecting his first professional singles title on the ITF World Tennis Tour at M15 Antalya.
A former junior world No. 8 and quarter-finalist in the boys’ singles event at 2019 Roland Garros, Cobolli took some revenge on the player who had denied him a deeper run in the junior event in Paris two years ago, beating Shintaro Mochizuki en route to the final in Turkey, where he ultimately overcame Dragos Nicolae Madaras 0-6 6-3 6-3.
Cobolli, whose greatest success as a junior came in winning the 2020 Roland Garros boys' doubles title alongside Swiss Dominic Stricker, climbed 26 spots to a career-high ATP ranking of 837 by virtue of his first professional tournament win.
A double success for Italy saw Franco Agamenone also collect a singles title, with the 27-year-old winning at M15 Monastir to secure his second title of 2021 – and sixth career title overall.
Paul Jubb also won a second title of the year at M15 Sharm El Sheikh – and fourth career title overall.
The 21-year-old Brit, who has a 17-4 win-loss record across the six ITF events he has contested this year, defeated India’s Sasikumar Mukund 6-2 6-7(8) 6-4 in the title decider to add to his victory at the same venue in February.
There was a double triumph for Russian players last week, with two Ivans - Ivan Nedelko and Ivan Gakhov – claiming titles.
Nedelko won his first title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in 19 months on home soil at M15 St. Petersburg.
The 34-year-old Russian, who has now won 27 ITF singles titles overall, won seven titles during a prolific 2019 season but followed with just eight match-wins in 2020 . A 2-6 7-5 6-4 win over Illya Beloborodko in his latest final appearance looks to be setting him back on track.
Ghakov, meanwhile, collected his first crown since 2018 at M15 Shymkent – his 11th ITF title overall - after defeating another Ukrainian, Eric Vanshelboim, 6-3 5-7 7-5 in the final.
Elsewhere, Gonzalo Lama had waited five years for a tournament victory before winning at M15 Cairo earlier this year, and he moved quickly for a repeat of that feeling after prevailing at M15 Cordoba.
The 27-year-old Chilean defeated Argentine Facundo Juarez 6-3 6-2 in the final for his 12th career singles title. All 12 of those wins have come on clay – including 10 at ITF level and two at ATP Challengers.
