Cid Subervi wins first European title
For the second time in three weeks, Dominican Republic Davis Cup player Roberto Cid Subervi has been crowned singles champion on the ITF World Tennis Tour. This latest win, his first on clay since winning in his homeland in December 2017, was also his first triumph in Europe.
Cid Subervi was competing at the M15 Gyor tournament in Hungary and lived up to his top seed billing as he moved through the rounds racking up a series of straight sets wins saving his best for the final where he was in devastating form to see off the Czech Republic fourth seed Vit Kopriva, himself having won all rounds leading into the final in straight sets, 6-1 6-0.
23-year-old Xiaodi You took a big step towards a return to the WTA top 300 at the weekend by claiming the biggest title of her pro career to date at the W60 Jinan tournament in China.
Unseeded You, who knocked-out the number one seed in straight sets in round two, twice fought her way back from near defeat in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds before taking the title with a 6-3 7-6(5) win over Australian Kaylah McPhee in Sunday’s final.
In Tunisia at the W15 Tabarka tournament, Seone Mendez was the only player last week to win both singles and doubles titles with the singles title also being her sixth of 2019 and putting her joint top of the 2019 singles title winners leaderboard with Vitalia Diatchenko and Maiar Sherif. The 20-year-old Australian reached a career high ranking of 434 in June 2018 and is now not too far off this at 458.
Like last week, three players were celebrating the important career milestone of winning a first pro singles title. These new champions, all women, were Salma Djoubri (W15 Haren in the Netherlands), Emilie Lindh (W15 Cancun in Mexico) and Yeon Woo Ku (W15 Yeongwol in Korea).
Ku, put in a remarkable performance in Korea where she was appearing in the singles main draw of a pro tournament for just the third time. After first round losses in her other two appearances in June 2017 and May of this year, the 16-year-old was entered using her junior ranking and eliminated three seeded players, including the top seed 6-3 6-1 in round two, as she won her first main draw pro matches and also showed great mental strength in the final when coming from a set down to take home her maiden title, 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Lukas Klein picked up a fifth title of 2019 with a win in his homeland. His 7-6(3) 6-3 defeat of Kirill Kivattsev in the M15 Bratislava final will also go some way towards breaking into the ATP top 300. He is currently at 320 so will certainly be keeping an eye on next Monday’’s ranking release after the US Open concludes.
