Burrage beats Bronzetti to claim W60 Croissy-Beaubourg crown
Briton Jodie Burrage clinched the biggest title of her career on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W60 Croissy-Beaubourg on Sunday – and moved in sight of a place in the WTA top 100 as a result.
Burrage defeated Italian Lucia Bronzetti 3-6 6-4 6-0 in the final to secure her first title in two years – and fifth ITF singles title overall – at the French hard court tournament.
The victory over the world No. 73 was the second-best of Burrage’s career in terms of ranking, adding to her triumph over then-world no. 4 Paula Badosa at the WTA event in Eastbourne last year.
Burrage now has seven top 100 scalps to her name overall and is closer than ever to joining that elite group.
The 23-year-old has contested just five tournaments so far in 2023 – and, perhaps owing to her lack of matches, the British No. 2 has not been included in Great Britain’s team for their Billie Jean King Cup Qualifier clash with France in Coventry on 14-15 April. She began the season with a runner-up finish at W60 Canberra, before falling in the last round of qualifying for the Australian Open - and in back-to-back qualifying matches at WTA events in Austin and Indian Wells.
Magali Kempen also enjoyed a breakthrough triumph this weekend, claiming her biggest title yet at W40 Murska Sobota.
The 25-year-old Belgian defeated Maria Timofeeva 7-5 7-5 in the title match at the Slovenian hard court event to secure her 10th ITF crown overall.
