Barty win hands Australia 2011 Junior Fed Cup title
Australia defeated Canada to claim the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas title for the first time since 2007 after straight sets singles wins for the Belinda Woolcock and Ashleigh Barty.
Woolcock defeated Carol Zhao and Barty overcame Francoise Abanda - both in straight sets - to beat Canada to the title.
Canada mixed up their nominations for the title decider, playing the injured Abanda for just the second time this week, but it wasn’t enough. Zhao struggled to find her first serve and without that weapon she couldn’t put any pressure on Woolcock.
“I knew it was going to be a tight match and I had my doubts beforehand but I knew that every point would count so I had to remain focused and concentrate on each and every point,” explained Woolcock.
Czech Republic won the battle for third place over Italy after singles wins for Barbora Krejcikova and Petra Rohanova.
Just three of the 16 matches played on the final day across the junior Fed and Davis Cups went down to a decisive rubber – the majority were settled in the singles, allowing players and spectators alike to flock to the main show courts to catch a glimpse of the finalists in action helped by the fact that the finals started an hour later than the other matches.
