2021 Super-Seniors Individual World Championships concludes
The last ball was hit at the 2021 Super-Seniors World Individual Championships on Saturday, bringing an end to an action-packed two months on the ITF Seniors Tour.
The last day of the 2021 event at the Font de sa Cala, Mallorca began with the Men’s 80 singles final at the Font de sa Cala, Mallorca, with Chilean Jaime Rene Pinto Bravo defeating doubles partner Peter Pokorny in straight sets to add to his two previous world championship gold medals.
In front of a healthy crowd, Daniel Waldman of the United States conquered the Men’s Singles 65 competition for a ninth overall world title – completing an impressive comeback over top seed and Dutch favourite Fritz Raijmakers from 3-0 down in the first set.
Alfred Boeckl won the Men’s 70 singles after beating Frenchman Bruno Renoult 6-3 6-1 to complete a dominant week, with the German losing just one set across six matches.
Another German, Herbert Althaus, impressively swept the Men’s 85 singles by defeating American Herman Ahlers in straight sets, 6-4 6-1. Althaus also won the S1000 Capdepera 85 event the previous week to underline his world number one ranking.
In the longest men’s match of the day, Italian Antonio Claudi prevailed in a tense battle over Chris Ornstien. The Brit fought until the end, but Claudi proved too strong in a gripping 6-1 4-6 6-4 final to capture the Men’s 75 singles.
Claudi then teamed up with countryman Paolo Lazzari in the 75 doubles to add to his gold medal haul.
The women’s singles had been decided on the previous day. A strong German presence throughout the finals bore fruit for Reinhilde Adams in the Women’s 70 singles and Gudula Eisemann in the Women’s 75 event, both defeating compatriots to take the title.
However, it was not to be for Irmgard Gerlatzka in the Women’s 80 singles, the German retiring in the second set to give American Donna Fales the victory and an eighth world title.
Elsewhere, Brazilian Patricia Medrado comprehensively defeated American Carolyn Nichols 6-2 6-3 to cap an impressive week. Medrado followed up the singles title with a doubles gold medal – also over Nichols – to reflect her status as one of the standout players of the week. Medrado now has 14 world titles in total.
After an action-packed two weeks of team and individual competition in Mallorca, the 2021 Super-Seniors World Championships saw over 600 players compete across all events.
