01 Nov 2009 - ITF 2 Series. NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour - Nottingham, Great Britain
Scheffers, Gravellier, Norfolk win in Nottingham
Maikel Scheffers (NED), Florence Gravellier (FRA) and Peter Norfolk (GBR) made it a good day for the top seeds as the 15th Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, Britain’s last world ranking event on the 2009 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, drew to a close on Sunday at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre.

Scheffers won his second Nottingham Indoor men’s main draw singles title in three years after a straight sets win over defending champion and second seed Stefan Olsson of Sweden in Sunday’s final.

World No. 3 Scheffers won the last three games of the first set and the last four games of the second set to wrap up a 75 62 victory over world No. 4 Olsson and claim his third NEC Tour title of the season. He has now won one tournament apiece in 2009 at ITF 1 Series, ITF 2 Series and ITF 3 Series status.

The women’s singles final produced a relatively comfortable victory for Gravellier as the world No. 3 clinched her first Nottingham Indoor title and her fourth singles title of 2009. Breaks in the fourth and sixth games of the first set gave Gravellier the advantage over unseeded Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis.

Buis has had a breakthrough week, reaching her first ITF 2 Series final after victories over the fourth and second seeded players in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. However, Gravellier’s experience proved key in the final and she dropped just the fourth game of the second set en route to wrapping up a 63 61 victory.

With British representation in three of Sunday’s main draw singles and doubles finals, Peter Norfolk produced the most notable result of the day for the host nation as he won his fourth Nottingham Indoor quad singles titles.

World No 2 ranked quad Norfolk dropped just the opening game of his final against Dutch world No. 8 Dorrie Timmermans van Hall and the Brtion sealed a comprehensive 61 60 victory in just 53 minutes.

Norfolk was in two finals on Sunday, pairing up with his compatriot John Parfitt in the quad doubles decider and the British duo made a fine start against top seeds Boaz Kramer (ISR) and Timmermans, winning the final two games of the first set. However, Kramer and Timmermans came back to edge the second set in similar fashion and a run of three games in the middle of the final set was enough to give Kramer and Timmermans enough of a cushion to go on and seal a 57 75 63 victory.

Scheffers claimed his second title of the day in the men’s main draw doubles final, pairing up with fellow Dutchman Ronald Vink to justify top seeding. Scheffers and Vink dominated second seeds Olsson and Tom Egberink (NED) to ease to a 61 61 victory in their final tournament before another crack at the Camozzi Doubles Masters.

After a fine win over the second seeds in Saturday’s semifinals, British third seeds Lucy Shuker and Whiley were unable to build on a one set lead of Buis and Gravellier in Sunday’s women's doubles final. After going head-to-head earlier in the day in the women’s singles final, fourth seeds Buis and Gravellier made a fine comeback against Shuker and Whiley and went on to prevail 36 62 62.
