| Buis upsets van Koot to reach Nottingham final |
For the second successive day Marjolein Buis (NED) produced the biggest singles result at the Nottingham Indoor, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, on Saturday after beating her Dutch compatriot and second seed Aniek van Koot to reach her first ever ITF 2 Series final at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre.
Buis will play French top seed Florence Gravellier on Sunday after both women’s singles semifinals went to three sets, while the top two seeds will contest the men’s main draw singles and quad singles finals.
In a contest lasting just over three hours, Buis took a 5-2 lead in her semi-final against last year’s runner-up and world No. 6 van Koot before van Koot fought back to take the opening set on a tie-break. Buis fought back herself and took the last three games of the second set, but van Koot made a confident start to the third and deciding set and took a 3-0 lead. However the complexion of the match changed once again as Buis levelled the final set at 4-4 before taking a 6-5 lead. Van Koot forced a deciding tie-break, but a series of errors allowed Buis to open up a 5-0 lead, while van Koot served a double fault to give the world No 12 six match points. Van Koot saved one match point, but Buis ended arguably the biggest win of her career with an ace, sealing a 67(6) 63 76(1) victory.
In the other women’s semifinal, world No. 3 Gravellier dominated the opening exchanges against third seed Jiske Griffioen (NED), the Frenchwoman dropping just the fourth game of the first set. Gravellier and Griffioen exchanged breaks early in the second set, but Griffioen made the decisive breakthrough in the last two games to level the contest. However, Gravellier broke at the start and the end of the third set to wrap up a 61 36 62 victory and stay on course for her first Nottingham Indoor title.
By comparison the men’s main draw and quad singles semifinals passed relatively quickly. Sunday’s men’s main draw singles final will be contested by the Nottingham Indoor champions for the past two years, world No. 3 Maikel Scheffers (NED) and world No. 4 Stefan Olsson (SWE).
Top seed Scheffers, the 2007 champion, needed just an hour to beat French fourth seed and world No. 11 Frederic Cattaneo. The Dutchman’s ultra-consistent backhand and movement around court played a large part in his 61 62 victory over Cattaneo.
A run of four games in the middle of his first set against Dutch third seed Ronald Vink gave Olsson the upper hand in the other semifinal and the defending champion dropped just the second game of the second set as he sealed 63 61 victory in 56 minutes.
Peter Norfolk (GBR) plays Dutch second seed Dorrie Timmermans in Sunday’s quad singles final. The world No 2 ranked quad and top seed, Norfolk dropped just the second game of his semifinal in a comfortable 61 60 win over John Parfitt (GBR). Meanwhile, world No 8 Timmermans eased through the other semifinal against Adam Field (GBR) without dropping a game. Norfolk bids for a fourth Nottingham Indoor title on Sunday.
