| Mistry beats sixth seed Morille in Nottingham |
Multiple Nottingham Indoor champion Jayant Mistry (GBR) produced the only win over a seeded payer during Thursday’s opening day of the penultimate ITF 2 Series event of the 2009 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre.
In his second match of the day, former British No 1 Mistry beat sixth seed Francois Xavier Morille (FRA) 63 63 to become one of three Britons to reach Friday’s men’s main draw singles quarterfinals.
There were no such problems for top seeds Maikel Scheffers (NED) and Stefan Olsson (NED), the champions in Nottingham for the past two years. After all eight seeded players had first round byes, 2007 champion and world No. 3 Scheffers eased past Spain’s Quico Tur 61 62, while defending champion and second seed Olsson overcame a tough challenge from experienced Briton Kevin Plowman 64 63.
Earlier in the day, Tur and Plowman had won two of the three first round matches to go to three sets, Tur overcoming his younger Spanish compatriot Daniel Caverzaschi 61 46 60, while Plowman upset Laszlo Farkas (HUN) 63 46 62. Sebastien Husser also came through his first round match in three sets to beat Jelle Ossterwijk (NED) 62 46 62, but the Frenchmen then lost out 26 26 to Tom Egberink. Egberink goes on to contest the only all Dutch quarterfinal against third seed Ronald Vink, who eased through his opening match against Zachary Beaulieu (USA) 61 61.
Mistry is one of three Britons in to the quarterfinals, where he is joined by Gordon Reid and David Phillipson. Fifth seed Reid plays fourth seed Frederic Cattaneo (FRA) in the last eight after a closely fought 75 63 second round victory over fellow British player Marc McCarroll. Cattaneo secured the most comfortable of Thursday's second round win, beating Tim Phillips (GBR) 60 61.
Phillipson also came through an all-British second round match, the seventh seed overcoming Kevin Simpson 62 61. Phillipson faces Scheffers in the quarterfinals.
There were few surprises in the opening matches in the women’s singles, with all the main protagonists progressing to the quarterfinals after straight sets wins.
Defending champion Lucy Shuker (GBR) secured a 60 61 victory in her opening match against her compatriot Louise Hunt, while world No. 3 and top seed Florence Gravellier (FRA) equalled Shuker’s feat by easing past Russia’s Natalia Bakhamatova for the loss of just one game.
Shuker plays world No 7 and 2005 Nottingham Indoor champion Jiske Griffioen (NED) in Friday’s quarterfinals after Griffioen opened her challenge with a 60 62 victory over the other Russian entrant in the draw, Ludmila Bubnova. Meanwhile Gravellier plays world No 10 Annick Sevenans (BEL) in an intriguing line-up of quarterfinal matches.
The closest of the day’s women’s singles matches ended with Marjolein Buis (NED) beating Britain’s Anna Tarkowski 63 63. Buis faces German third Katharina Kruger in the last eight.
Jordanne Whiley (GBR) takes on last year’s runner-up and this year’s second seed Aniek van Koot (NED) in the quarter-finals. Whiley held off a second set fight back from Frenchwoman Christine Schoenn to win her opening match 61 75. Ten world top 10 ranked players line-up in a field of 70 for this year’s Nottingham Indoor, with eight of them playing their last major tournament before next month’s NEC Wheelchair Tennis Singles Masters in Amsterdam.
World No. 2 quad Peter Norfolk (GBR) opened his bid for a fourth Nottingham Indoor title with a comfortable 62 61 win over Israel’s Boaz Kramer. Norfolk faces John Parfitt (GBR) in a semifinal line-up that features three British players after Parfitt beat Danny Robbins (GBR) 61 62.
Second seed and world No. 8 Dorrie Timmermans (NED) plays Adam Field (GBR) in the other semifinal. Timmermans beat Liam O’Reilly (GBR) in the opening round of matches without dropping a game, while Field won an all-British contest against Antony Cotterill 60 63.
