| El Salvadorian wheelchair player earns Level 1 coaching qualification |
El Salvadorian wheelchair tennis player Mario Lucero has gained his Level 1 Coach Certification after successfully concluding his participation on an ITF/Olympic Solidarity funded Level 1 Coaches course.
Lucero was the only wheelchair player among 23 candidates on his coaching course. His place on the course was secured with the aid of support from the ITF and the Cruyff Foundation.
At the closing ceremony for the course, the course tutor, Cuban Wilfredo Henry, expressed his admiration for Lucero's accomplishment as it was the first time he has had a wheelchair tennis player as a student on this type of course. Lucero was assessed on teaching wheelchair tennis students, both in individual lessons and group lessons. His own playing level was also assessed, while he also took a written theory test to assess his knowledge.
Lucero's participation on this Level 1 Coaches Course was also an experience for all the students on the course. One of the PLAY TENNIS practical sessions was conducted with young wheelchair tennis players, which proved a challenge to all the students who had never worked with wheelchair tennis players. Having Lucero as a classmate also taught a lot to his classmates since they shared with him the daily routine of preparing his tennis wheelchair and changing tyres, and they also had the chance to ask him questions about being a wheelchair user, a tennis player and a tennis coach.
Lucero is the coach for a group of young tennis players in El Salvador, an initiative that has been possible to accomplish with the support from the ITF Silver Fund and the Johan Cruyff Foundation.
Course tutor Henry also remarked that the Confederación de Tenis de Centroamérica y El Caribe (COTECC) region should encourage more wheelchair tennis players to become certified coaches so they can help grow wheelchair tennis.
Cecilia Ancalmo, ITF Development Officer for Central America, commented, "The El Salvador Tennis Federation and COTECC are proud of Mario’s accomplishment and wish him a productive career as tennis coach".
