Esther Vergeer appointed as a Laureus Ambassador
Five-time Paralympic champion Esther Vergeer has been appointed as a Laureus Ambassador at the launch of the new Laureus Sport for Good Foundation the Netherlands.

A double winner of the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award, most recently in 2008, 28-year-old Vergeer was one of three new Laureus ambassadors announced in Amsterdam as the Netherlands joined the global Laureus Sport for Good Foundation's growing network of subsidiary national foundations in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United States. Laureus supports almost 70 humanitarian projects worldwide.

German tennis legend Boris Becker, the Vice Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, and Laureus supporter Ruud Gullit joined Prince Pieter-Christiaan van Oranje in Amsterdam to launch the new Laureus Sport for Good Foundation the Netherlands.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is supported by a growing number of Laureus Friends and Ambassadors around the globe. At the launch event in Amsterdam, Pieter van den Hoogenband, triple Olympic swimming gold medallist, and Yvonne van Gennip, one of the most successful female Dutch all-round speed-skaters and a three-time gold medallist in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, were also appointed as Laureus ambassadors along with Vergeer.

The three new Laureus ambassadors received their certificates in Amsterdam from Boris Becker, who said: "I congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to create the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in the Netherlands. We intend to create a legacy for good in the future through the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation the Netherlands.

"Sport is close to the hearts of all the people in this country and I know it will be very successful in helping to improve the lives of disadvantaged young people. You have great supporters in your three Laureus Friends and Ambassador members Pieter van den Hoogenband, Esther Vergeer and Yvonne van Gennip, and I wish them well and welcome you all to the Laureus Family," added Boris.

Under the Chairmanship of His Highness Prince Pieter-Christiaan van Oranje, the Laureus Foundation the Netherlands will begin its activities by supporting three projects in 2010 - De Laureus Maritime Challenge, De Zomerkampen van de Bas van de Goor Foundation and an evening football competition for young people from distressed families in the Hague.
