Zimbabwe Silver Fund Project
Former world No. 1 doubles player Wayne Black was among those who supported the Silver Fund Project in Zimbabwe in September.

Eleven days of activities to help support the continued activities in Zimbabwe included six days in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe in the north east of the country and five days in Bulawayo, in the south west of Zimbabwe.

Black, a four-time Grand Slam doubles champion, joined Zimbabwe's No 1 wheelchair player Nyasha Mharakurwa for an exhibition after the opening ceremony for the Silver Fund project at the Mayor's Office in Harare.

Mharakurwa is the Player Ambassador for Silver Fund Project in Zimbabwe, working alongside ITF Coach Representative Hennie De Klerk (RSA).

With backing for the Silver Fund project from the Zimbabwe Revenue Office (ZIMRA) and the support of the Zimbabwe Paralympics Committee, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, Tennis Zimbabwe and several businesses, the future looks bright for the project and for the continued development of wheelchair tennis in the country under the guidance of Wheelchair Tennis Zimbabwe Association.

The six days of activities in Harare included clinics at St Giles Primary School and Danhiko Secondary School as well coaching clinics elsewhere in the community and a series of meetings with key partners, including sourcing facilities for tennis wheelchair repairs. The project gained a considerable amount of media interest, including a spot on national TV programme Good Morning Zimbabwe. At the end of the six days in Harare a tournament was held.

After a seven hour journey by road to Bulawayo, activities in the province included a clinics at Bulawayo Athletic Club and King George VI School, where a workshop was held for coaches and teachers. A group of hearing impaired players also joined in the clinics.

Two wheelchair tennis clubs are being established in both Harare and Bulawayo and Wheelchair Tennis Zimbabwe Association have development officers overseeing activities in both provinces.

A healthy future for the sport includes an agreement with Tennis Zimbabwe to include a showcase for Wheelchair Tennis Zimbabwe Association in the upcoming Zimbabwe Open Tennis Championships.
