Spain's Davis Cup star and current world No. 15 Tommy Robredo is Tournament Director for this week's 'Memorial Santi Silvas', an ITF 2 Series event on the 2009 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
At the recent ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Rome, Robredo spoke to the ITF and revealed more about the inspiration behind the tournament and the plans he has for what is the most important wheelchair tournament to take place in Spain this season.
Robredo and his team have organised the tournament in honour of Robredo's friend, wheelchair tennis player and tournament organiser Santi Silvas, who passed away in 2008.
Robredo, who was a close family friend of Silvas, has previously paid tribute to him on his website, saying that in Santi's memory he would do everything he can to bring a wheelchair tennis tournament to their hometown of Olot.
This week's tournament will be contested by a field of 16 men and eight women, including world top 10 players Stefan Olsson (SWE), Maikel Scheffers (NED), Martin Legner (AUT), Aniek Van Koot and Lucy Shuker (GBR).
The inaugural Open Diputacion de Girona 'Memorial Santi Silvas' takes place at the Club Natacio Olot from 10-14 June. Robredo and his father Angel, along with the help of their team, have worked hard to attract sponsors and donors to raise funds towards the tournament.
“We invite everybody to come and attend,” said Robredo. “With your help and presence only, we will already make Santi’s dream come true.”
Tommy Robredo’s foundation will give the proceeds from the tournament to help fund more players who want to enjoy wheelchair tennis. “We want to show people that tennis can be played by everybody."
Robredo and Silvas used to play tennis together in Olot until Silvas was injured in an accident and subsequently started to play wheelchair tennis, coached tennis next to Robredo’s father Angel and went on to organise a series of NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour events.
Silva's biggest dream was to be able to organise a big event one day and he started to work with Robredo on the new ITF 2 Series event before his death last year, aged 33.
