| Ammerlaan lifts Rotterdam title |
Top seed Robin Ammerlaan (NED) beat world No.3 Stephane Houdet (FRA) in three sets in Saturday's men's singles final in Rotterdam to clinch his first title of 2009.
As the first wheelchair tournament to take place alongside Rotterdam's ATP Tour event came to an end, up to 1500 spectators watched two of the world's top three men's wheelchair players go head-to-head and it was Houdet who struck first to take a 3-1 lead. However, Ammerlaan hit back to take the next five games and the first set.
Ammerlaan carried his momentum in to the ssecond set as he opened up a 4-1 lead, but Houdet then found his form and led 5-4 before the set went to a tiebreak. The French player forced Ammerlaan in to an increasing number of errors and dominated the tiebreak, but Ammerlaan regrouped to take a 4-2 lead in the deciding set. Houdet put in another determined effort to come back, but could never get back in front and Ammerlaan sealed a 63 67(1) 63 victory to extend his advantage over Houdet in NEC Tour head-to-heads to 11-4.
Richard Krajicek, tournament director of the ATP event in Rotterdam, said: "Yesterday I watched the final with a lot of admiration, it is really amazing what those guys can do. They really go for it and every once in a while a player hits the side boards. I tried it myself but I can't do it! There were over 1000 spectators for the final and that is unique. This tournament has been a great success."
