The women’s and quad singles finalists were decided on the third day of the 25th Austrian Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, in Gross Siegharts as Adam Kellerman upset the seedings in the men’s singles to reach his first ITF 2 Series semifinal of 2012.
German top seed Katharina Kruger and second seed Marianna Lauro of Italy both came through tough women’s singles semifinals, as Kruger held of Austrian fourth seed Henriett Koosz 63 63 and Lauro survived a first set tiebreak en route to securing a 76(3) 62 win over third seed Ju-Yeon Park of Korea.
The quad singles final will be contested by British top seed Antony Cotterill and Italy’s Antonio Raffaele. Cotterill eased to a 61 60 win over unranked Austrian Markus Wallner in his semifinal, while Raffaele also ended Austrian hopes in the event when he beat Peter Tatschl.
While Austrian players lost out in the women’s and quad semifinals, Martin Legner kept the host nation’s hopes alive in the men’s singles, but it was Kellerman and Dutch second seed Tom Egberink that were involved in the two most fascinating quarterfinals.
Seventh seed Kellerman got the better of his fellow Australian and third seed Ben Weekes 61 36 62 to set up a semifinal against Legner, who proved stronger than Poland’s Piotr Jaroszewski to advance 63 61.
Jaroszewski’s compatriot and fifth seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki provided Egberink with a stiff challenge, but ultimately the young Dutch player found a way to wrap up a 62 26 75 victory. Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Stephen Welch of USA secured the most convincing of the quarterfinal wins, beating Italy’s Fabian Mazzei 61 60.
The women’s singles and quad singles titles will both be decided on the penultimate day of play in Austria, along with all three main draw doubles finals.
Top seeds Kellerman and Weeks came from a set down to reach the men’s doubles final, in which they will play second seeds Legner and Mazzei.
The top two seeded pairings will also contest the women’s doubles final as Kruger and Lauro take on Park and Janel Manns of Australia.
The quad doubles final will be between top seeds Cotterill and Raffaele and the Austrian duo of Tatschl and Wallner.
