Former world No. 1 Stephen Welch won his seventh men’s singles title on the 2012 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour on Sunday after beating fellow American Steve Baldwin in the final of the Tennis Canada International, while Yuka Chokyu ensured that that there was a home winner in the women’s singles and both players shared in the doubles titles in Montreal.
Less than a month after being taken to a final set tiebreak by Baldwin at the PTR Championships on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Welch was far more dominant in their latest encounter and secured a 62 63 victory to win his third title of the year in Canada after previous wins in the Birmingham Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Classic and the Stanley Park Open.
Welch later partnered Baldwin to beat second seeds Philippe Bedard and Eric Gilbert of Canada to win the men’s doubles after the American top seeds won the final 61 61.
On the last day of round-robin matches in the women’s singles Chokyu beat Mika Ishikawa 60 60 to end the ITF 2 Series tournament without dropping a single game in her four contests.
Chokyu also collected the women’s doubles title without losing a game after partnering Ishikawa to beat Kirsten Sharp and Amanda Yan 60 60.
