As world No. 1 quad singles and quad doubles player David Wagner prepared his bid for his seventh Swiss Open title last week the US Olympic Committee announced the three-time Paralympian as its Athlete of the Month for June for his performances on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
Wagner was honoured alongside top doubles partnership Bob and Mike Bryan, who were named Team of the Month for June.
Prior to last week’s Swiss Open Wagner went undefeated in June, starting the month by winning his seventh Japan Open title and then going on to win his sixth BNP Paribas Open de France title for his second Super Series title of the month on the NEC Tour.
Wagner partnered Canadian players to win the quad doubles at both tournaments, pairing up with Sarah Hunter at the Japan Open and Adrian Dieleman at the BNP Paribas Open de France.
Wagner goes into this week’s British Open unbeaten since the quad singles semifinals at the SA Open in Johannesburg in early April, where his loss to South Africa’s Lucas Sithole was Wagner’s only singles loss in 36 matches this season.
