Former world No. 1 players Esther Vergeer and Robin Ammerlaan, both past champions at the US Open Wheelchair Tennis Competition, have been among the cast of stars appearing this week at the final Grand Slam of the year in New York.

A day after joining the commentary staff at the Tennis Channel to give her insight into the men’s singles quarterfinal between current world No. 1 Shingo Kunieda and world No. 5 Gustavo Fernandez, Vergeer was back in front of the cameras on Friday when she had the honour of conducting the ceremonial coin toss ahead of the women’s singles semifinal between Victoria Azarenka and Flavia Pennetta on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

Earlier in the day Ammerlaan, the men’s singles winner at the first two US Open Wheelchair Tennis Competitions in 2005 and 2006, played in a pro-am event alongside the likes of Martina Navratilova, Pat Cash and Chanda Rubin.
