There were no surprises on the second day of the 5th Open Memorial Santi Silvas, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as the eight seeded players In the men’s singles started their challenges in Olot and the first two round-robin matches in the women’s singles ended in straight sets wins for Aniek van Koot and Lola Ochoa.
Top seed Gustavo Fernandez led the progress to the quarterfinals with a commanding 60 60 win over Italy’s Luciano Grande, while the Argentinean world No. 5’s next opponent , Swiss sixth seed Daniel Pellegrina, also eased past Italian opposition.
However, there was better fortune for Italy, as fifth seed Fabian Mazzei defeated Spain Alvaro Illobre to set up a quarterfinal against second seed Joachim Gerard. The Belgian dropped just two games to Frenchman Philippe Bonnet, while Dutch fourth seed Tom Egberink, seventh seed Roberto Chamizo and eighth seed Dan Wallin also yielded just two games apiece in their opening matches.
Chamizo carries home Spanish hopes into the last eight of the men’s singles, where he will face Egberink, while a Swedish player is guaranteed to feature in the semifinals as Wallin takes on Stefan Olsson.
Olsson started his quest for a fifth successive title in Olot by defeating Spain’s Juan Rodriguez 60 61.
Van Koot and Gerard join Robredo and Hingis for exhibition

Despite a deficit of 50 places in the current rankings on her French opponent, Spain’s Lola Ochoa showed why she has been as high as No. 14 in the women’s singles rankings when she beat world No. 25 Pauline Helouin 64 61.
While both posting 60 62 wins in their respective opening matches Gerard and van Koot also featured during the day in a special exhibition alongside ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ambassador and Tournament Director Tommy Robredo and former world No. 1 women’s singles player Martina Hingis.
With five-time Grand Slam singles champion Hingis making a guest appearance in Olot, she played an exhibition with Robredo before partnering Gerard in a one-up, one-down mixed doubles against Robredo and van Koot.
