Carlos Santos of Brazil and Macarena Cabrillana of Chile won the men’s and women’s singles titles on Sunday’s final day of the Copa Guga Kuerten, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour and part of Guga Kuerten Week, hosted by the three-time Roland Garros champion in Florianopolis, Brazil.

Santos extended his unbeaten record against Medeiros to seven matches in the men’s singles final when the second seed secured a 61 63 victory over top seed Medeiros.

Medeiros also had to be content with runners-up honours in the men’s doubles after a dramatic final. Argentina’s Mario Garcia and Medeiros made a solid start to the final, but second seeds Zilmar Pires of Brazil and Fabio Padilla of Colombia fought back and won a marathon deciding match tiebreak to prevail 36 61 (16-14).

In the women’s singles second seed Cabrillana upset Brazilian top seed Rejane Candida 64 61. The two players were due to come face-to-face again in the women’s doubles final, but Candida and her Brazilian countrywoman Marisa Ferreira were forced to pull out, handing victory to the Chilean duo of Cabrillana and Mara Paz Diaz.
