Olsson, Griffioen win Open Memorial Santi Silvas

News Article

Sweden's Stefan Olsson ensured that his name remains as the only name on the men's roll of honour at the 3rd Open Memorial Santi Silvas in Olot, Spain, on Sunday.

Top seed and world No. 5 Olsson won the men's main draw singles title for a third time in Olot, defeating Italian fourth seed Fabian Mazzei 61 62.

The women's singles final proved to be a lot closer, with German world No. 9 Sabine Ellerbrock pushing top seed and world No. 2 Jiske Griffioen to two tie-breaks. However, for the second day in succession Griffioen won the important points to win the match 76(1) 76(7) and become the second Dutch winner of the women's title in three years.

Mazzei to meet Olsson in Open Memorial Santi Silvas final

Italy's Fabian Mazzei will play defending champion Stefan Olsson of Sweden in Sunday's men's main draw singles final at the 3rd Open Memorial Santi Silvas in Olot, Spain, while Germany's Sabine Ellerbrock will play Jiske Griffioen in the women's final.

Top seed Olsson kept his title defence on track in the men's singles semifinals with a comfortable 61 63 victory over third seed Tom Egberink. The world No. 5 now takes on fourth seed Mazzei on Sunday after the Italian ended the progress of unseeded Swede Dan Wallin 62 63.

Both women's semifinals were much closer, with third seed Ellerbrock overcoming second seed Annick Sevenans of Belgian in a tense encounter 61 57 64. Meanwhile, fourth seed Jordanne Whiley marked her 19th birthday by getting close to Dutch world No. 2 Griffioen than ever before in their previous seven matches. However, Griffioen won the points that mattered to cinch a 76(4) 64 victory.

Whiley and Ellerbrock later came out to edge the resumption of the first set of their women's doubles semifinal against Spaniards Elena Jacinto and Lola Ochoa. Second seeds Whiley and Ellerbrock then dominated the second set to prevail 76(4) 61 and set up a final against Griffioen and Sevenans, but it as the top seeds that eventually clinched the title 61 62.

A busy day of doubles action saw third seeds Niclas Rodhborn and Wallin defeat second seeds Reid and Kevin Simpson 61 76(4) in their men's doubles semifinal, but the Swedish duo posed few problems for top seeds Egberink and Olsson, who went on to retain their title after a 63 60 victory in the final.

Saturday's penultimate day of play in Olot also saw tournament director Tommy Robredo host a clinic and take part in a wheelchair tennis exhibition.
