All the seeded players in action enjoyed comfortable straight sets wins on the first day of the 4th Open Memorial Santi Silvas, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, at the Club Natacio Olot.
As seven of the eight men’s singles quarterfinalists were decided, top seed Stefan Olsson of Sweden maintained his unbeaten record in Olot as the three-time champion at the ITF 2 Series tornament defeated Philippe Bonnet of France 60 61.
On what was a tough day for the home players, Alvaro Illobre had the most success of all the Spanish entrants, but ultimately Dan Wallin proved too strong and earned a 63 63 victory to set up an all-Swedish quarterfinal against Olsson.
Third seed Frederic Cazeaudumec of France defeated Francesco Prat Serra 60 62 and will now face Switzerland’s Daniel Pellegrina, who dropped just one game to Spain’s Jose Luiz Montoya.
There will be two Argentinean players in the bottom half of the draw after second seed Agustin Ledesma beat Dutchman Bas Parinusa 61 60, while seventh seed Ezequiel Casco eased past Juanjo Rodriguez 63 61.
Casco will face former finalist Fabian Mazzei of Italy in the last eight after Mazzei began this year’s tournament with a 60 64 win over Roberto Chamizo, a member of Spain’s 2011 junior World Team Cup winning team.
Ledesma will find out on the second day of play whom his quarterfinal opponent will be after Sweden’s Niclas Rodhborn won the only contest needed to complete the last 16. Rodhborn beat Juan Gutierrez Mosquera 62 64 and will now face a second Spanish opponent when he plays fifth seed Martin Varela for a place in the last eight.
Thursday’s second day of play will see the start of the women’s singles.
The first day of the tournament saw the Fundacio Tommy Robredo welcome 200 local students to the Club Natacio Olot for a wheelchair sports clinic.
