World No.1 Shingo Kunieda (JPN) won his first Sydney International Open men's main draw singles title on Sunday as the first ITF 1 Series event of the 2009 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour drew to a close at Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre.
After heavy rain caused the 2008 final between Kunieda and Robin Ammerlaan (NED) to be abandoned, this year's final was held in searing temperatures and Kunieda scorched his way to the first set against the Dutch world No.2.
Ammerlaan held his own for most of the second set, but Kunieda finally gained the crucial break of serve to complete a 61 75 victory. The Japanese player extends his winning run since the start of the 2008 season to 47 matches.
In Sunday's other main draw final, top seeds Florence Gravellier (FRA) and Jiske Griffioen (NED) went a set down to second seeds Lucy Shuker (GBR) and Daniela di Toro (AUS). However, Gravellier and Griffioen secured a double break to take the second set and then gained the decisive points in the decider to wrap up a 36 62 75 victory.
