Australia’s Adam Kellerman gave himself an early birthday present as he reached his first ITF 1 Series men’s singles semifinal on Thursday’s third day of the Belgian Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour after beating world No. 10 Frederic Cattaneo for the first time in his career.
World No. 23 Kellerman had never taken more than seven games off Cattaneo in three previous matches, but made a solid start and held off the French third seed in the deciding set for a 62 46 63 win that sets up a semifinal against top seed Gustavo Fernandez on what will be the Australian’s 23rd birthday. Fernandez powered into the last four after recording his second 60 60 win in successive days as he beat fifth seed Martin Legner 60 60.
Fernandez remains on course for a rematch of his British Open quarterfinal against Joachim Gerard after this week’s world No. 4 defeated his fellow Belgian and doubles partner Mike Denayer 60 61. Japan’s Satoshi Saida completes the semifinal line-up after emulating Fernandez with a 60 60 quarterfinal win over seventh seed Wolfgang Stieg to end a tough day for the Austrian challengers.
There were no surprises in the women’s singles quarterfinals as all four seeds advanced and Aniek van Koot and Marjolein Buis set up an all-Dutch semifinal.
Second seed van Koot secured the most comprehensive win in the quarterfinals, beating French eighth seed Pauline Helouin 60 60. Buis opened her second match in successive weeks against Chile’s Francisca Mardones with a stronger first set than in their British Open quarterfinal and the world No. 4 went on to complete a 62 61 victory.
Sabine Ellerbrock continued her title defence with a 61 63 win over Dutch world No. 9 Sharon Walraven. The German world No. 1 will play fourth seed Kgothatso Montjane for a place in the final after the South African fourth seed eased past Japan’s Miho Nijo 63 60.
While it was a rest day in the quad singles, the quad doubles finalists were decided, with USA’s Greg Hasterok and David Wagner beating Canada’s Sarah Hunter and Britain’s Ian Payne.
The top seeds will play Italian duo Marco Innocenti and Giuseppe Polidori for the title, Innocenti and Polidori having overcome the second seeds, Anders Hard and Antonio Raffaele, in their semifinal.
